Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, August 30, 2015 – A deep bellow of a V10 engine comes from behind a curtain of fog, the red and black nose of a familiar Dodge Viper ACR-X crests the hill, smashing through the grey, nearly solid wall of weather. A No. 42, a Lux Performance Group and Steve Streimer name emblazoned on the Trans Am Series TA3i class car flashes under the Road America flagger stand closely chased by its black on red sister car adorned with the name of Cindi Lux. That is the way a dramatic Hollywood script might conclude Saturday’s shortened Next Dimension 100 at the Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin track. For once in a motorsports movie, the screenwriters would get the drama right as, amid a fray of spinning cars, Streimer (Sherwood, Oregon) took the lead from his Aloha, Oregon-teammate to score his second series victory of his rookie season. The one-two finish was Lux Performance Group’s second of the year and second consecutive as Cindi Lux bettered Streimer at Brainerd International Raceway earlier in the month with her No. 45 Dodge Viper ACR-X.
Much of the four-mile, 14-turn Road America course was socked-in early with fog and a heavy mist that turned to rain and back. Despite the damp conditions, team principle Fred Lux (Aloha, Oregon) elected to start both Vipers on dry-weather racing slicks. The No. 84 Dodge Viper ACR-X of Lee Saunders went with the full wet-weather grooved tires. The opening laps of the race were kept under caution for safety reasons. As the fog lifted, Trans Am Series officials called for the pole sitter, Lux, and fellow front-row starter Streimer to bring the class to the green flag. The grooved tires on the No. 84 allowed Saunders around both Northwest-based entries. As the track dried, Lux stalked the No. 84, pushing the third Viper as it searched for water off-line. The 12-time road racing champion would re-take the lead and begin to pull away with seven laps remaining.
Lux was heading toward the victory with Streimer in third entering the closing stages of the race - originally scheduled for 100-miles/25-laps. Then, coming off a caution, multiple cars came together in Turn Six. Lux, with a lead over second and third-places, slowed and began to work her way through the confusion of spinning cars. With a clear path in view, one last car spun back off the grass. Lux brought the American-made supercar to a standstill without making contact and prepared to maneuver around and continue. It was then that the cars behind her caught up. Unable to stop, Streimer made contact with his teammate sending Lux off into the grass. He moved around to the right while she fought through the wet grass. With the time required to clear the carnage too extensive, series officials called the race at its 75-minute limit. Guaranteeing Streimer his second Trans Am Series race win with Lux in second.
The race will be broadcast on the CBS Sports Network, Saturday, September 12 at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Quotes
Fred Lux, Lux Performance Group Team Principal: “With the last lap melee we all got tangled-up. I’m not sure how we even got out of that mess! Another one-two finish was a great result but, as the cars disappeared towards Turn One that last lap, it wasn’t the order we expected to see come back around. Both cars sustained some damage but not nearly what a lot of guys did out there today. This one was ugly! We’ll get the Lux Performance Group Vipers back in top-running order for the next race.”
Cindi Lux: “This is one of those days you are really happy for the team, however I’m frustrated as a driver. It’s absolutely perfect that Lux Performance Group took the top-two steps on the Road America podium and that Vipers led every lap of the race. The Lux team really did an amazing job with both cars all weekend. I’ve had a lot of good cars here over the years but this time it was setup so well for the long run. We really had things in hand until the boondoggle in Turn Six. Cars were everywhere. I had worked my way through and then got stopped. Looks like Steve had nowhere to go and got into the back of me. That put me off track and into the wet grass. It was impossible to gain traction. That was frustrating because we did everything right. It’s a bittersweet pill to swallow. On the other hand, Steve did a great job and taking advantage of the mayhem in Six at the end of the race proves how good he has become since joining Lux Performance. Overall, I’m so pleased with his improvement every race. The entire program is getting stronger. It is another one-two finish, another one-two start and it’s hard to complain about that. As a driver, we’ll go after it next time.”
Steve Streimer: “A crazy race! The whole day was full of yellows. Towards the end of the race there was an incident at Turn Six. It was total pandemonium. When I came up on the corner, I went off into the grass and thought I had it back but we made a little contact with Cindi. As she was trying to get back on track, I picked-up first place. I am glad to be able to bring home first-place for Lux Performance. It was great to get the one-two finish for the second time in a row!”
Avondale, Louisiana, October 7, 2015 – Want to celebrate a great year of wins and lessons learned? No better place than New Orleans where the party is usually followed by knowing better next time! Lux Performance Group, LLC hopes to close its premier season in the Trans Am Series with one final win – and maybe learn a few more lessons – at NOLA Motorsports Park, October 9-11. As the team enters the final race of its partial inaugural season in “America’s Road Racing Series”, Cindi Lux (Aloha, Oregon) driving the No. 45 Lux Performance Group Dodge Viper ACR-X, and Steve Streimer (Sherwood, Oregon) in the No. 42 Viper, are each chasing additional TA3i class victories and the Aloha, Oregon-based program a third one-two finish of the year this weekend at the new track in the “Big Easy”-area.
The 2015 “Return to the Road Tour” was intended to get the Fred Lux-managed race company back into the rhythm of national-level racing… and it did just that. The operation acquainted itself well campaigning America’s V10-powered supercar in tight competition taking two first-place and second-place finishes, three victories (two for Streimer and one for Lux) and two pole positions in four starts – Lux had only three starts missing the first race of the year with a torn meniscus in her left knee. Sunday’s 100-mile championship finale is a late addition to the schedule as a final tune-up for the 2016 season.
The V10-powered Vipers will enjoy four test sessions on Thursday, October 8 with official practice starting at 10:45 a.m. Central Time (CT) on Friday. Qualifying for the two-car team will come in the TA3i class “Fast Five” session at 4:10 p.m. the same day. The second practice will take place on Saturday at 10:20 a.m. Sunday’s 100-mile/37-lap or 70-minute race will take the green flag at 12:45 p.m.
Quotes
Fred Lux, Lux Performance Group Team Principal: “Originally, we had planned to get in four starts and call it a season. Then we heard there would be a party down here in New Orleans so we figured we’d come visit during hurricane season to see what that is all about. This place is a complete unknown to everyone so that should give us an even playing field. It looks like an interesting track with a lot of straightaway for the Viper to stretch out. We’ll see where we are at the end of the day. This will add one more set of data for us to take home and over-analyze this winter.”
Cindi Lux: “It’s kind of hard to think about the last race of the season. Where did the summer go? Going into our final race, it’s certainly been a character-building year. The team has done a great job prepping two reliable Vipers for a partial season of Trans Am. Going to a new track is always something that I really enjoy. Personally, for this weekend, I just want to get a great result that will allow us an excuse to go party with the team! Finish off the year on a high-note. It may be a little early for Mardi Gras but the band is ready to go!”
Steve Streimer: “Six weeks is long enough! It is time to get back into the number 42 Lux Performance-prepared Dodge Viper. Having never been to NOLA Motorsports Park or even Louisiana for that matter, I am really looking forward to the added challenge of learning a new track, qualifying and racing all in the same weekend. Getting a chance to visit New Orleans with my good friends at Lux Performance will be icing on the cake.”
