1999 WGGT - Las Vegas - Saturday Report

Having practiced third quickest yesterday, I got up feeling pretty good about today's qualifying. The only change for this event is that we only have one qualifying session vs. two, which we normally get.

As the morning progressed, I couldn't believe all the family and friends that started to arrive!! Its unbelievable!! Not only my family from Yakima and Portland but also Fred's family from Illinois and California are here. Plus a few college sorority roommates that came in from Philly and Seattle. Including some very good racing friends from the Portland and San Diego area. I am so very lucky to have the support of these people. I just wished I had more time to spend with each and every one of them.

Qualifying was OK. It wasn't my best performance behind the wheel. I probably tried to rush things and pushed the car harder than I should. We definitely didn't "dance" like I have in the past with these things.

We ended up 4th fastest. The top 4 cars are within 1/10 of a second of each other!! It should be a close and fun race. But I really feel the time I put in this morning is something I can run all day long. Once again, I am not the best qualifier but I know it will be different in the race.

After qualifying, there were autograph sessions and interviews to be done. One of the interviews is for a 2-hour documentary on the new Oprah Winphrey network called Oxygen Media. They are doing a story on female athletes in the world of motorsports. It will air in February.

Something worth noting about today...... as I was cruising in the paddock area. I had at separate times both David Brabham and J.J. Letto come up to me wishing me good luck. They both are also in a Championship hunt. We sat there discussing what each of us needed to do. What a special experience. I just really hope that I get to drink a glass of champagne with them tomorrow night at the banquet!! What a treat!

Well, I am trying to relax as much as possible and keep focused. I just hope I get a few hours sleep. I just really want to get this race in the books!!!!
